Ingredients for Rolo® Pretzel Reindeer

  1. Mini Pretzel Twists: For the antlers and body of the reindeer, mini pretzel twists work best. They easily break into the perfect shape and size for a realistic antler look. They provide the ideal size and shape, and their saltiness balances the sweetness of the other ingredients.
  2. Rolo® Candies: These chocolates are ideal because they have a smooth caramel center that melts in the oven, creating a delicious blend with the pretzel base.
  3. Candy Eyes: Candy eyes bring your reindeer to life.
  4. Red M&Ms: Red M&Ms (or any red candy) are perfect for the nose. They give a pop of color and hint at the classic Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer story.

How to make Easy Rolo® Pretzel Reindeer

Before you begin, make sure your ingredients and materials are ready. You’ll need mini pretzels for the body, Rolo® candy for the sweet center, candy eyes, and red candies for the nose to bring your reindeer to life. For the antlers, extra pretzels cut in half will do the trick. You’ll also require a baking sheet lined with parchment paper to ensure your reindeer don’t stick and are easy to remove.

  1. Prepare Baking Sheet: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and for easy cleanup.

2. Lay Out Pretzels: Place the small twist pretzels in rows on the parchment paper. These will serve as the reindeer faces and bodies.

3. Add Rolos: Unwrap the Rolo candies and place one on top of each pretzel. The Rolo will become the reindeer’s nose and face once melted.

4. Melt in Oven: Put the baking sheet in the oven for about 3-4 minutes. You want the Rolos to be softened but not completely melted.

5. Form Antlers: While the Rolo is soft, gently press the broken pieces of mini pretzel twists into the top sides of the Rolo to form antlers. Do this gently so you don’t squish the chocolate too much.

6. Add Eyes and Nose: While the chocolate is still soft, press two candy eyes and one red M&M (flat side down) into the Rolo to create the face. The M&M should be at the bottom for the nose and the eyes just above. I took a toothpick and covered the chocolate over the pretzels more.

7. Cool Down: Allow your creations to cool at room temperature or place them in the refrigerator to speed up the process. This will harden the chocolate and set everything in place.

8. Enjoy or Gift: Once cooled and set, your Easy Rolo® Pretzel Reindeers are ready to be enjoyed! Serve them as a fun treat, or package them for adorable, edible holiday gifts.

Tips for Making Easy Rolo® Pretzel Reindeer

  • Monitor Oven Closely: Keep a close eye on the oven; melting the Rolos too much can make them too runny, and not enough melting will make it hard to stick the parts together.
  • Use Tweezers for Precision: For placing the eyes and noses, a pair of tweezers can be very handy. It allows for more precise placement and keeps your treats looking neat.
  • Break Antlers in Advance: Break your mini pretzel twists into antler shapes before you start. Having them ready to go will make the assembly process faster. You may need more than 20 because sometimes they don’t break correctly.
  • Set with a Chill: After assembling, if the treats are a bit soft, pop them in the refrigerator for a few minutes. This will help everything set and hold together better.
  • Make in Batches: If you’re making a large number, do it in small batches. This way, the chocolate won’t harden before you’re done assembling, and each reindeer will look perfect.

Recipe Variations

  • Variety of Chocolates: Replace Rolos with other chocolates like Hershey’s Kisses, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, or even flavored chocolate squares. Each will give a different taste and look.
  • Nutty Noses: Instead of red M&Ms, use a red peanut M&M or a small red candy-coated chocolate with a peanut inside for an added crunch.
  • Edible Glitter or Sprinkles: Before the chocolate sets, sprinkle a little edible glitter or festive sprinkles over the reindeer for extra sparkle and color.
  • Colorful Antlers: Dip the pretzel antlers in melted colored candy melts before attaching to add a pop of color. You can match these with the nose or eyes for a coordinated look.
  • Different Candies for Eyes: Instead of candy eyes, use mini chocolate chips, small dabs of black icing, or any small candy that can represent eyes.

Substitutions

  • Pretzels:
    • Gluten-Free Pretzels: For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free pretzels available in most health food sections.
    • Rice Cakes or Crackers: If pretzels aren’t available, small rice cakes or crackers can be a base, though the flavor profile will change.
  • Rolo Candies:
    • Nutella or Chocolate Spread: If Rolos aren’t available, a dollop of Nutella or any chocolate-hazelnut spread can substitute. It won’t harden the same but will be delicious.
    • Other Chocolate Candies: Use any caramel-filled chocolate that can melt slightly in the oven. Even a piece of chocolate with a caramel drop on top can work.
  • Candy Eyes:
    • Mini Chocolate Chips or Nibs: They can make good eyes if you’re looking for something less sugary or more readily available.
    • Icing: Small dots of black or white icing can be used for eyes.
  • Red M&Ms (Noses):
    • Red Skittles or Jellybeans: Any small red candy can substitute for the nose.
    • Dried Cranberries or Cherries: For a less sugary option, these can add a tart flavor and natural red color.
  • Mini Pretzel Twists (Antlers):
    • Pretzel Sticks: Break them into the desired length for a different antler look.
    • Sliced Almonds: For a nuttier option and a different texture, almonds can mimic the shape of antlers well.

Notes for Substitutions:

  • Allergies: Always consider allergies and dietary restrictions when choosing substitutes, especially when introducing nuts or gluten-free options.
  • Texture and Taste: Substitutions can change the texture and taste, so consider how each substitute will interact with the other ingredients.

Storage Tips

  • Cool Completely: Before storing, ensure your reindeer treats are completely cool. This prevents condensation inside the container, which can make the pretzels soggy.
  • Airtight Containers: Use airtight containers to store your treats. This keeps out moisture and helps maintain the pretzels’ crispness and the chocolate’s texture.
  • Separate Layers with Parchment Paper: If you’re stacking the reindeer in the container, place a sheet of parchment or wax paper between each layer. This prevents them from sticking together and keeps the decorations intact.
  • Room Temperature Storage: Generally, these treats do best stored at room temperature in a cool, dry place. This keeps the pretzels crisp and prevents the chocolate from melting or becoming too hard.
  • Short-Term vs. Long-Term: These treats are best enjoyed within a few days of making them. However, they can last up to 2 weeks if stored properly. If you need to keep them longer, consider freezing them.
  • Freezing: If you want to store them for an extended period, you can freeze the reindeer treats. Place them in a single layer on a baking sheet to freeze them initially, then transfer them to a freezer-safe airtight container or bag. They can last up to 3 months this way. Thaw at room temperature before serving.
  • Check Regularly: If stored for more than a few days, check your treats regularly for signs of stale pretzels or blooming chocolate (a white coating that can appear), and consume them sooner rather than later.
