YOU’LL NEED THE FOLLOWING INGREDIENTS:

All-purpose flour: The balanced protein content of all-purpose flour allows it to provide sufficient structure while still maintaining a tender crumb. This makes it a good choice for waffles, as it helps to create waffles that are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.
Baking powder & soda: They are used to help waffles rise. The baking soda provides a strong initial lift, while the baking powder helps to give the waffles a more tender texture.
Egg whites: By using only egg whites and omitting the yolks in your waffle batter, you add extra moisture that helps create steam during the cooking process. This steam contributes to a delightful rise, resulting in light and fluffy waffles. The absence of egg yolks ensures that the waffles maintain their desired texture—fluffy and crisp—without becoming overly dense or cake-like.
Buttermilk: Buttermilk is acidic, which helps to activate the baking soda in the batter. This helps the waffles to rise. And, Buttermilk is moist, which helps to keep the waffles from becoming dry. Buttermilk Substitute: To make a buttermilk substitute, blend 50% plain, nonfat yogurt and 50% milk.
Nutella: everyone loves Nutella! Hazelnuts, cocoa, and sugar are used to make Nutella, which has a rich, creamy flavor.
Vanilla: Vanilla extract helps to balance the sweetness in the waffle batter. It adds a pleasant depth of flavor that can counterbalance the sugar and other sweet ingredients. This balance ensures that the waffles are not overly sweet, resulting in a more well-rounded and enjoyable taste experience.
Powdered sugar: Using powdered sugar in the waffle batter offers the advantage of easy dissolution, ensuring a smooth and light consistency. The fine texture of powdered sugar allows it to blend seamlessly with the other ingredients, contributing to a uniform and delightful batter. Butter: Unsalted melted butter adds a rich, buttery flavor to the waffle batter and keeps the waffles tender.

RECIPE TIPS AND TRICKS

  • Preheat the waffle iron: Pre-heat the waffle iron to the recommended temperature before pouring the batter. This helps to achieve a crispy exterior while keeping the inside fluffy and cooked evenly.
  • Use a non-stick cooking spray: To prevent the waffles from sticking to the iron, lightly spray it with a non-stick cooking spray or brush it with melted butter before adding the batter. You can easily remove the waffles once they are cooked by greasing the waffle iron.
  • Don’t overfill the waffle iron: Pour the batter onto the center of the waffle iron, leaving some space around the edges. Overfilling can cause the batter to overflow and make a mess and it also hinders the waffle’s ability to rise properly. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the recommended amount of batter to use. Embrace the imperfections and prioritize batter distribution over perfection – those slightly rough edges often indicate successful spreading and rising.
  • Keep the waffles warm: Place the cooked waffles on a wire rack inside a rimmed baking sheet in a preheated oven at a low temperature (around 200°F or 95°C) to keep them warm and maintain their crispness while you finish cooking the remaining waffles.  As you are cooking, simply transfer each finished waffle from your waffle maker to the wire rack.

Sarah’s Did You Know?

Did you know that Nutella was originally created during a chocolate shortage? In the 1940s, during World War II, an Italian pastry maker named Pietro Ferrero faced limited access to cocoa due to the war. To compensate, he created a creamy hazelnut spread called “Pasta Gianduja” by blending ground hazelnuts with a small amount of cocoa. This eventually evolved into the beloved Nutella spread we know today.

RECIPE VARIATIONS

  • Berry Bliss Waffles: Fold fresh or frozen berries (such as blueberries, raspberries, or strawberries) into the waffle batter before cooking. The burst of fruity goodness in every bite adds a refreshing and vibrant twist to your waffles. Top with additional berries and a dollop of whipped cream for a burst of summery flavors.
  • Choco-Nut Delight Waffles: Add a handful of chocolate chips and chopped nuts (such as almonds, pecans, or walnuts) to the waffle batter. As the waffles cook, the chocolate melts and creates pockets of gooey indulgence, while the nuts add a delightful crunch. Drizzle with warm Nutella syrup and sprinkle with additional nuts for a decadent treat.
  • Cinnamon-Spiced Waffles: Mix ground cinnamon and a pinch of nutmeg into the waffle batter for a warm and cozy flavor profile. The aromatic spices create a comforting experience, perfect for chilly mornings or a cozy brunch. Serve with a dusting of powdered sugar and a drizzle of maple syrup for an extra touch of sweetness.

STORAGE TIPS

To maintain the quality and freshness of waffles, it is best to store them separately from the syrup. Add the syrup just before serving. This ensures that the waffles remain crisp.

Cool the Nutella waffles completely before storing them to prevent condensation and moisture buildup.

  • Leftovers.  Place the waffles in an airtight container or tightly wrap them with plastic wrap to preserve their freshness and prevent drying out. If you have multiple waffles, layer them with parchment paper or wax paper in between to prevent sticking. Store the waffles in the refrigerator if you plan to consume them within two days. Make sure you seal the container tightly to maintain its quality.
  • Freezing. To freeze, layer them with parchment paper or wax paper in between to prevent sticking, and place them in a freezer-safe bag or container. Label the container with the date for freshness tracking. Consume the frozen waffles within 1 to 2 months for the best taste and texture. After that period, they may still be safe to eat but could lose quality.
  • To reheat: Remove the waffles from the refrigerator or freezer and let them come to room temperature for a few minutes. Reheat the waffles by placing them in an oven or toaster oven until they warm through. This will help them regain their crispness.

What’s the difference between a Belgian waffle maker and a regular waffle maker?

I used a Belgian waffle maker for this recipe. When it comes to waffle makers, the choice between a Belgian-style waffle maker and a regular waffle maker can significantly impact the outcome of your waffles.

Belgian-style waffle makers are distinct for their deeper grid pattern, which results in more pronounced browning and crusty pockets. The reason behind these deeper divots is that Belgian-style waffles typically use yeast in the batter. The waffles require additional space to expand and rise as the yeast ferments and creates gas during cooking. This unique feature of Belgian-style waffle makers contributes to their characteristic fluffy texture. It creates those delightful nooks and crannies that are perfect for holding all the delicious Nutella goodness.

Regular waffle makers create thinner, crispier waffles with shallow pockets. These waffles are lighter and often have a more delicate texture. Both types of waffle makers have their unique charm and can produce delicious waffles. Ultimately, the choice between Belgian-style and regular waffle makers depends on personal preference and the desired texture and thickness of the waffles you prefer to enjoy with your Nutella or other toppings.

FAQ’s

How do I get my waffles crispy?

Please ensure your waffle iron is properly preheated to the recommended temperature before pouring the batter. This allows the waffles to cook evenly and crisp up nicely.
Cook Until Golden Brown: Cook the waffles until they reach a golden brown color. Avoid opening the waffle iron too soon, as it can cause the waffles to tear or become less crispy. Follow the recommended cooking time provided by your waffle iron manufacturer.

What other toppings can I add to Nutella waffles?

To enhance their flavor and texture, many toppings can be added to Nutella waffles. Some popular options include fresh berries, sliced bananas, whipped cream, chopped nuts, caramel sauce, and powdered sugar. I also like experimenting with other spreads or jams like peanut butter or raspberry jam. Another good one is to add a scoop of ice cream for a decadent dessert version!

Can I make the waffle batter ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator?

It is generally recommended to prepare the waffle batter fresh just before cooking. The leavening agents in the batter may lose their effectiveness over time, resulting in less fluffy waffles. However, some recipes allow for batter preparation in advance. Check the specific recipe for instructions on make-ahead options.
